About

Amelia is a UK-based Movement Director, Choreographer, Movement Coach and specialist working in stage and screen. Her portfolio includes character moulding and development, embodied connections to historical material, dance and physical theatre sequences and ensemble world-building.

Amelia's movement vocabulary includes dance, physical theatre, contact improvisation, specialist fight and intimacy choreography, movement for actor techniques (e.g. iterations of Laban, Lecoq, and Meyerhold). This vocabulary has been developed through an embodied practice, and an unpacking of these techniques in written form and through physical experimentation.

In addition to this extensive movement experience, Amelia has both a master's in English Literature and History and Movement Direction and Teaching (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama). It is this unique combination of Amelia’s rich movement vocabulary, academic perspective and interdisciplinary attitude that enable her to create unique and specific offers which speak to the performer/s and creative vision.

Movement Direction

Amelia's work in movement direction stems from a deep understanding of the experiential anatomy, interest in sensorial experience and thoroughly researched context and engagement with movement archives. She is excited by work that offers unique perspectives either in new writing or in a reimagining of an established text. Her work spans from working 1-1 to large ensemble casts.

Choreography & Dance

Amelia's dance knowledge emerges from an embodied experience of multiple established and emerging dance forms. She specialises in styles such as Western Ballet, Modern, jazz, and musical theatre dance, contemporary African forms including Talawa technique and Dancehall, Traditional African forms including Gwo Ka, and solo/partner dance forms including Blues, Charleston and Swing. For productions requiring a different form, Amelia thrives in learning and understanding the core of a movement vocabulary and shaping choreography that embodies this core.

Intimacy & Fight

Amelia has practiced and undertaken training in both fight choreography and has studied intimacy choreography. As an interdisciplinary practitioner, Amelia is interested in building choreography that is woven into the fabric of an entire production and that is truly character and story driven in line with the natural instincts of the performers.

Her pedagogical practice has been developed through independent research and development and in undertaking detailed pedagogical training such as the Movement Directing and Teaching MA (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama).
